Story
about Stone
Natural stone can be placed into three groups: Igneous, Sedimentary
and Metamorphic. These three types of stone have clear differences
in appearance and characteristics.
Igneous Stone
Igneous stones are formed through liquid magma that cooled
down and solidified in or on the earth’s crust. The
most common igneous rock is granite.
Sedimentary Stone
The process of sedimentary rock formation involves a variety
of sediments carried by gravity, water, wind or other agents
of weathering or erosion where they are deposited. Examples
of sedimentary stones are limestone, travertine, sandstone
and slate.
Metamorphic Stone
Metamorphic rocks are sedimentary or igneous rocks that have
been altered by extreme heat and/or pressure (e.g. formation
of mountains). This process changes the characteristics of
the original rock. Examples of metamorphic rock:
Marble – a converted limestone (sedimentary stone),
Quartzite – a converted sandstone (sedimentary stone). |
